About the Course

Ladies, a lot of you have an overlooked advantage in the tech industry. Many of you are very hardworking and conscientious, and you love to study the fundamentals. If you're at all like me, you've been held back because no one pointed you in the right direction or gave you the confidence to know your worth. If you study this material and learn the value of what you've achieved, you will be able to outperform many of your peers in this industry*.
*None of that is to say discrimination doesn't exist. I will be happy to share my own experiences dealing with this and (sometimes) overcoming it, but it will at least give you more confidence in your ability than you had before.
Requirements
IMPORTANT: you will need some programming experience. If you haven't done any programming before, I encourage you to visit Automate the Boring Stuff with Python to learn just enough Python to keep up. If you already know a different language like JavaScript, that's ok. The principles I will be teaching will be language agnostic, and we will all be learning to program in more than one language. The main thing is that you need to be able to write functions and use variables, conditionals and loops. If you can manage that, we will take care of the rest in the course.
You will need to bring your own laptop and charger. It doesn't matter what operating system you have on it, as we will be installing a virtual machine to give you all similar environments.
You will probably need to bring your own snacks and drinks for now, as I have yet to work out venue and other logistics.
Bring a curious mindset. This class will work best if you apply yourself to learn and remember the concepts. I will be assigning group and solo projects to reinforce what we learn. I will be offering advice on how to learn and remember this material. And I will be encouraging collaboration and mutual mentorship, as that is the most effective way to retain this knowledge.
Logistics
Where: The Library at the Dock - Meeting Room 1.
When: Wednesday nights from 6 to 8pm. If that doesn't work for a lot of people or if I get enough interest to run an additional class, I may expand to another timeslot in the future, but for now, it will be Wednesday nights at 6pm.
What to bring: see above. Bring a laptop and charger and optionally a pen and notepad. Bring whatever food and drinks you may need (I will advise if catering is offered in future, but for now, assume it is not).
Price: $10 per person per evening. I want to keep the price affordable. This will ensure I can cover any costs. If the price needs to change at any point, I will inform you as soon as I know. See my Humanitix page for tickets.
